About Lisa Sargent,
Fundraising Copywriter and
Donor Communications Specialist
“You have to have your heart in the business,
and the business in your heart.” -- Thomas J. Watson
When it comes to your direct mail and e-mail donor communications, you have lots of choices -- agency, freelancer, the list goes on. My one-woman copywriting shop gets results that rival the best of them.

So what makes me different?
I specialize in direct mail and e-mail
fundraising and donor care communications for nonprofits...
With a decade of writing experience under my belt,
six-plus of those years have been dedicated almost exclusively to copywriting for nonprofits: storytelling is in my blood. My client roster includes terrific organizations in the US and Europe like Shriners Hospitals for Children ... Best Friends Animal Society ... Merchants Quay Ireland, and others.
I work as your “on-call creative partner”...
This means up to sixty percent of my time can be devoted to a single nonprofit -- working on retainer to write ongoing fundraising and donor care communications. Or working daily with the CEO or president of an organization, keeping donor communications flowing seamlessly so that he (or she) can invest less time behind the desk, and more time on donor development. And sometimes, it means one project, one time: an annual appeal, an email series.
Big job or small, I check my ego at the door and focus on the project at hand.
To get a feel for how I work, see how I helped Shriners Hospitals for Children with their holiday email fundraising, or this case study on how I helped Merchants Quay Ireland begin the switch to story-based direct mail appeals.
I’ve got a heart for your donors, and a head for your business...
With a B.S. in Accounting, my roots are planted firmly in the business world. (In fact, I love numbers nearly as much as words.) Regarding persuasive words, I’ve trained with some of the top names in B2C and B2B marketing: Clayton Makepeace, Chris Marlow, Marcia Yudkin, and Nick Usborne, among others. So whether you want to talk testing and direct response numbers, or discuss the merits of a Johnson Box in your next appeal, I’m right at home.
I share what I know...
My articles and stories have been published online and offline: in regional newspapers and
national general interest and fundraising magazines, such as FundRaising Success, AMC Outdoors, Connecticut’s Journal Inquirer and New Hampshire’s Granite State News. I’m also a member of the Direct Marketing Fundraisers Association (DMFA) and the voice of SOFII’s popular copywriting clinic on donor thank-you letters.
